All The Way Back!

The tale: Grant Connor Leslie was born on March 18, 1999 at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia. He was 10 days or so early -- a novel idea for us, considering that Tristan was quite LATE! Grant came very quickly, robbing his mommy of the opportunity to succomb to drugs (a concept to which she was staunchly opposed, prior to entering active labor!) He came so quickly that his midwife missed the occasion altogether. He was born 50 minutes after we entered the labor and delivery room. He weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces -- a whole pound smaller than Tristan, and "cooked" about 3 weeks less.

This was Grant at about 4 months of age.

When I look at these pictures, I always think that "I should have known." Grant was diagnosed with hydrocephalus at 8 months of age. He underwent an Endoscopic Third Ventriculostomy about 10 days later (brain surgery). The apparent cause is aqueductal stenosis. Noone knows why this happens, but it happens to 1 in 1,000 babies born every year. Another 1 in 1,000 people "acquire" it, due to head injury, tumors, etc. My favorite website (and charity) is www.hydroassoc.org. They were a lifesaver in our time of desperation and need, as were the many, many people who cried out to God on Grant's behalf.
